About Venetian Masks: Since well before the Renaissance, Venice ruled the Mediterranean Sea bringing great wealth and, eventually, marked decadence to the citizens of the Republic. Masks became a hallmark of Venetian culture, protecting deal-makers, spys, government agents, lovers and harlots, the high and the low, even monks and nuns, from scrutiny and discovery. Travelers came to Venice to revel, to indulge in every luxury and promiscuity, all under cover of costume and mask. As the power of the Venice Republic waned, the public mood changed and laws were eventually passed that prohibited masks for everyday street use, limiting them to certain months of the year - slowly these times were reduced to the week of Carnevale, or Mardi Gras. Today, Venetian craftsman are still world-famous for their hand-made, exquisitely beautiful masks.
