About Angels:

Our word angel comes from the Greek word angelos which means "messenger", relating to the most common jobs that angels perform for God. Angels are spiritual beings who live in Heaven and descend to earth to perform special tasks for God, occasionally taking on a physical aspect so that we may see them and hear them.

Angels serve as a bridge between God and the fallen Creation - since angels are immortal and have chosen to perfectly love God and carry out his will. We know that angels do have free will, since Satan himself was an angel before his fall, as well as the legions of angels who accompanied him when he left God's presence.

The Catholic Church classifies angels into a heirarchy called the Nine Choirs of Angels: Angels, Powers, Principalities, Dominions, Virtues, Thrones, Archangels, Seraphim and Cherubim. Some of these are based on authority and position relative to God - the Seraphim guard the throne of God, for example.

However, some classifications are based on function - the Powers are the warrior angels fighting against evil spirits, while Virtues are called the Spirits of Motion and have dominion over nature and the ability to perform miracles.
