While today bagpipes are most commonly associated with Scotland, similar piping instruments have been traced to ancient times in the Middle East and Greece. In fact, the Bible makes mention of pipes in both Genesis and Daniel.
Small statues depicting pipers have been found at archeological sites in England dating to Roman times. Nero himself was a piper and is depicted playing on ancient coins.
Irish bagpipes appear on carvings dating from the 8th century onwards. By the 12th century, at the latest, Scottish pipers were piping the troops into battle against the English.
Today, when we think of bagpipes, we most commonly envision the Great Highland Bagpipe, which has accompanied the Scottish Highland Regiments into battle for the past three hundred years. As popular today as ever, pipe bands have proliferated all over the world, with hundreds here in the United States.
