While several calendars were in use by the cultures of Middle-Earth, the one used to record the grand adventures of the Fellowship and the War of the Ring is the Shire Reckoning (S.R.) calendar used by the Hobbits. The Shire Reckoning calendar began with the settlement of the Shire (S.R. 1) and, at the time Frodo and Sam set off from Hobbiton it is S.R. 1418 (3018 in the Steward's Reckoning of the men of the Third Age). The Hobbit's year was divided into months of 30 days each, with extra days being added in to total 365. Three of these extra days came in June and July and were called Lithedays. Two days were added in the winter - the last day of the year and the first day of year - and were called Yuledays. All were celebrated as holidays with much feasting and fun. Every four years, an extra Litheday was added in the summer (for their leap year) and was called Overlithe - an especially boisterous holiday. The Hobbits disliked having dates shift name days each year (such as we have, where November 1 is on Tuesday one year and Wednesday the next), so they gave no week day name to Mid-summer's Day or to the Overlithe. That way, the first day of each year was always on the first day of the week, and the last day of the year was always on the last day of the week (this would be like our New Year's Day always being on Sunday and December 31 always being on Saturday). The events in the Lord of the Rings take place at the end of the Third Age of Middle-Earth. The Third Age began when Elendil and Gil-galad defeated Sauron the first time (and Isildur took the One Ring). The Third Age of Middle-Earth ended with the departure of Elrond to the West in September 3021, though for recording purposes under King Elessar the Fourth Age Year 1 was counted as having begun on the first day of the year, March 25, 3021. When men began the new calendar for the Fourth Age, the Hobbits stuck to their old Shire Reckoning, with F.A. Year 1 being S.R. 1422. The Lord of the Rings calendar information presented here can be found in much greater detail in Appendix D following The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien. |
