New Zealand costume designer Ngila Dickson won an Oscar for The Return of the King, as part of the big sweep. She was also nominated for The Fellowship of the Ring and won Britain's Academy of Film and Television Arts Award for The Two Towers. No stranger to creating fantasy costumes, her past experience includes the costume design for the TV shows, Zena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Following her work on LOTR, she designed the costumes for The Last Samurai, for which she was also nominated for the Academy Award. As you can imagine, the task of creating believeable, appealing and at times exceptionally beautiful costumes for nine unique cultures and races was a formidable challenge, with over a hundred costumes needed for each group. From the elegant, ethereal Elven costumes with their suggestion of angelic androgyny to the charming Hobbit costumes reminiscent of the bucolic English countryside of just a few hundred years ago, to the medieval Norse warriors of Rohan and the classically magical costumes of Gandalf and Saruman, each of the Fellowship's races reflect a completely unique culture while blending beautifully in friendship with one another. |
