Weta Workshop, the movie design and special effects company located in Wellington, New Zealand, created the Orcs (each of the 200 was completely individual), trolls, all the other masks, prosthetics, hobbit feet and ears, and other creatures for the film trilogy - as well as each piece of armor and weaponry - a huge undertaking wonderfully executed. During the Oscar sweep for The Return of the King, members of the Weta team won dual Academy Awards for best make-up and best costumes (shared with costume designer Ngila Dickson). Two years earlier, they won Best Make-up and Best Visual Effects for The Fellowship of the Ring. While virtually unknown in the US before working with Peter Jackson on The Lord of the Rings, Weta Workshop has been busy since - creating armor and creatures for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (first of the projected series of The Chronicles of Narnia films) and, of course, they did the work on King Kong. Weta partnered with a California company, Sideshow Collectibles, to produce and market the line of collectible busts, armor replicas, environments, statues and latex masks based on their design work for Lord of the Rings. Having succeeded so well, they have now started their own in-house Weta Collectibles for marketing Narnia and King Kong collectibles and for future work. |
